How to Book a Queenstown Helicopter Flight
How to book a Queenstown helicopter flight: pick the right flight type, check flight time and landing, shared or private, weights, cancellation rules and when to book.
Booking a helicopter flight in Queenstown takes five minutes. Choosing which one to book takes longer, because flights with near-identical names differ in route, flight time, landing, transfers and price. If you have no strong preference yet, start with the Pilot’s Choice Helicopter Tour & Alpine Landing: $228 for 25 minutes, an alpine landing, hotel pickup in central Queenstown, and 4.9/5 from 314 reviews. Then book it for one of your first full days in town, so a weather cancellation can move to a later day.
Before you pay for any flight, decide what you want from it: a short scenic ride, a landing, snow, glaciers, Milford Sound, a private aircraft, or the cheapest way to fly in a helicopter. The steps below take you from that decision to a confirmed seat.
Check Availability
Step 1: Choose the type of Queenstown helicopter flight
Six kinds of flight leave from Queenstown, and each suits a different traveller. The prices are per person on GetYourGuide.
| Type | Best for | Our pick on GetYourGuide |
|---|---|---|
| Short Queenstown scenic flight, 20–30 min | First-time passengers, tight budgets, short stays, views over Lake Whakatipu | Remarkables Helicopter Flight & Alpine Landing, $201, 4.8/5 (257 reviews) |
| Alpine or snow landing flight | Photographs, couples, families, anyone who wants to step out on a mountain | Helicopter Flight with Snow Landing, 30 min, $293, 4.9/5 (44 reviews) |
| Glacier helicopter tour, about 50 min | Southern Alps scenery, snowfields, glacier views, photographers | Glacier Explorer & Earnslaw Burn Helicopter Flight, $480, 4.9/5 (226 reviews) |
| Milford Sound helicopter flight | Fiordland on a short stay, a once-in-a-trip splurge | Milford Sound Extended Helicopter Flight & 3 Landings, $828, 4.9/5 (40 reviews) |
| Fly-cruise-fly | First visit to Milford Sound, seeing it from the air and from the water | Milford Sound Cruise & Helicopter Alpine Tour, $830, 4.9/5 (200 reviews) |
| Private helicopter charter | Larger groups, proposals, anniversaries, families, custom routes | Quoted by the operator, not listed at a fixed price; see our private charter guide |
A landing can make a short flight feel far bigger than its minutes suggest, which is why every short flight in the table includes one. The glacier and Milford flights cost more because the aircraft travels much farther from Queenstown. If you are still undecided, our guide to which Queenstown helicopter flight is right for you compares the main flights side by side.
Step 2: Compare actual flight time
A “2-hour experience” does not mean two hours in the helicopter. The total can include check-in, the safety briefing, transfers, time on the ground at the landing, a cruise and waiting. Look for the flight duration on the listing, not the tour duration.
The difference is biggest on Milford Sound days. The $830 fly-cruise runs four hours door to door, and that includes the cruise; the flying is roughly forty minutes each way. Even on the short flights, the 25 minutes on the Pilot’s Choice includes the minutes you spend standing on the ridge at the landing.
Step 3: Check whether the landing is included
Some helicopter rides are overflights, sightseeing loops or transfers that never shut down on a mountain. Others include one or more landings. Look for exact wording on the listing: alpine landing, mountain landing, snow landing, glacier landing or Milford Sound landing.
If the landing is the main thing you want, confirm it on the listing before you book. Every flight named on this page includes at least one.
Step 4: Understand alpine vs snow vs glacier landing
These three words describe different promises.
Alpine landing
The helicopter lands somewhere in high mountain terrain, often a ridge on the Remarkables above town. There may or may not be snow, depending on the month.
Snow landing
The flight is planned around landing on snow. That depends on season and conditions. Heliworks, which runs the 30-minute snow landing flight, typically operates it from late autumn to early spring.
Glacier landing
A landing on or beside glacier ice in the Southern Alps. A “glacier flight” can fly over glaciers and land somewhere else, so read the inclusions. The $480 Glacier Explorer lists a glacier landing, and its listing says that landing depends on conditions on the ice and cannot be guaranteed on every departure. Our landings guide explains each type in more detail.
Step 5: Shared or private?
Most Queenstown helicopter tours are sold as shared flights: you buy one or more seats and may fly with other passengers. On the Heliworks snow-landing flight, for example, you may share the aircraft with six to nine others. Shared seats are the cheapest way to fly.
A private charter reserves the whole aircraft for your group.
Shared flight makes sense if:
- you are travelling alone or as a couple;
- budget matters;
- you don’t mind sharing the helicopter.
Private flight makes sense if:
- your group is large;
- privacy matters;
- you are celebrating something;
- you want a custom itinerary or more flexible timing.
For groups of four to six, add up the cost of individual seats and ask the operator for a whole-helicopter quote. The gap can be smaller than you expect. Our private charter guide works through the numbers by group size.
Step 6: Check minimum passenger numbers
Many shared flights need a minimum number of passengers to run. Your booking may be confirmed straight away, held until the minimum is reached, combined with another booking or moved to a different departure. On the Pilot’s Choice, a departure that does not fill gets you another slot or a full refund.
If your itinerary is tight, ask whether your departure is confirmed. This matters most for early-morning flights, off-season travel and less popular routes.
Step 7: Give accurate passenger weights
Expect to give each passenger’s weight when you book, and give the true figure. Helicopters have strict weight limits, balance requirements and seating rules, and your weight can affect where you sit, how many passengers fit and which aircraft flies. The Heliworks listing warns that a large difference between the weight you gave and your actual weight can force a change on the day. This is a safety requirement, not paperwork.
Step 8: Check baggage restrictions
Scenic helicopters have far less storage than an airliner, and large suitcases may not be allowed. For a sightseeing flight you need only a phone or camera, sunglasses and a few small personal items; leave the rest at your accommodation.
If you are using a helicopter for a one-way transfer, a lodge transfer or hiking access, tell the operator exactly what luggage you are bringing before you book.
Step 9: Check the cancellation policy
Two different situations have different rules:
- The operator cancels because of weather. Every flight on this site offers another departure or a full refund if the operator cancels.
- You cancel the booking yourself. Every flight on this site cancels free up to 24 hours before departure.
Before paying for any flight elsewhere, check the customer cancellation deadline, the weather policy, the rescheduling rules, the refund policy and any no-show charges. On an $800-plus Milford Sound day these rules matter more than on a $201 circuit, and Fiordland flights are cancelled for weather more often than the Queenstown circuits.
Step 10: Book early in your Queenstown stay
Helicopter flights depend on the weather. If you book your flight for your final morning and cloud cancels it, you have no day left to try again.
Book the helicopter for one of your first full days in Queenstown, then keep another day loosely planned. If the weather stops your first slot, you can move it. Our seasons guide covers which months see the most cancellations.
How far in advance should you book?
If the flight is one of the main things you want to do in Queenstown, book ahead, especially in the summer holidays, over Christmas and New Year, in ski season, in school holidays, at weekends and during major events. Each aircraft has a handful of seats, and private charters have limited slots too. The sunset flight has one departure window a day, so it sells out further ahead than the daytime flights.
Booking months ahead brings little benefit until you have compared the routes. Choose the right flight first, then lock the date.
Is same-day booking possible?
Sometimes. Short scenic flights can have seats free at short notice. Same-day booking suits you if your schedule is flexible, the weather is clear and you are travelling outside peak season.
It is a gamble if you have a short stay in Queenstown, a group, a fixed departure time in mind or a Milford Sound itinerary.
Is it better to book direct or through a booking website?
Either can work.
Booking direct
Booking with the operator can make it easier to talk to them, get weather updates and reschedule, and the product details come straight from the source.
Third-party booking platform
A platform such as GetYourGuide makes it easy to compare flights from different operators, read customer reviews, catch promotions and book in a familiar interface. Every price on this site is the operator’s own GetYourGuide listing, and the price shown at checkout is the price you pay.
Neither channel is always cheaper. Compare the final price for the exact same product, and compare the cancellation terms alongside it.
What should you compare between operators?
Use this checklist when two listings look alike:
| Feature | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Price | Obvious, but not enough on its own |
| Actual flight time | Shows how much flying you are buying |
| Route | Changes what you see |
| Landing included? | The biggest single difference in the experience |
| Landing type | Alpine, snow and glacier are different promises |
| Shared or private | Changes the price and the privacy |
| Minimum passengers | Can affect whether your departure is confirmed |
| Transfers | Hotel pickup or a courtesy coach from listed points |
| Weight rules | Can affect who in your group can fly together |
| Weather policy | Matters most on expensive flights |
How to compare Queenstown helicopter prices properly
Two listings both called a “Queenstown helicopter flight” can be very different products. One may be 20 minutes over the local basin. Another may be 50 minutes into Mount Aspiring National Park with a glacier landing. A third may be a Milford Sound day with three landings. The cheapest one may include less.
Our Queenstown helicopter price guide sets out what each price band buys, from the $201 circuit to the Milford Sound days.
Should you choose the cheapest helicopter flight?
Sometimes. If you mainly want your first helicopter ride, Queenstown from above and a few photographs, a short scenic flight may be all you need. The $201 Remarkables flight still includes an alpine landing.
You do not have to buy a glacier or Milford Sound tour because it sounds more impressive. You get the best value by paying for the features you care about.
When does an upgrade pay off?
Pay more when the upgrade gives you something different, not just more minutes.
Short flight → flight with alpine landing
It is usually a meaningful step up. In Queenstown the cheapest short flights already include a landing, so check you are not paying extra for one you would get anyway.
Local flight → glacier flight
Consider it if Southern Alps scenery is your priority. It moves you from the $201–$293 band to around $480.
Glacier flight → Milford Sound flight
Book it if Milford itself matters to you; the price rises to $744 and above.
Shared flight → private charter
It makes sense for large groups, special occasions, privacy or a custom route.
Avoid paying much more for a few extra minutes unless the route changes too.
Should you book a morning flight?
Mornings can bring calmer air, but no time of day is reliably best: mountain weather changes fast. Choose the departure that fits your itinerary, then stay flexible. If the operator suggests moving from the afternoon to the morning because the forecast looks better, take the offer.
Can you book a sunset helicopter flight?
Yes. The Sunset Heli Flight & Remarkables Alpine Landing costs $210 for a 20-minute flight with a drink at the landing site, rated 5.0/5 from 27 reviews (a small number of reviews so far). It suits couples, photographers and proposals.
The departure time shifts through the year with sunset, so check the time on your voucher, and leave your drink choice in the comments box at checkout. Availability also depends on the weather and the operator’s schedule.
Should you book winter helicopter flights differently?
Winter adds one more consideration: snow. If you want a snow landing, book a flight that names one, such as the $293 Heliworks snow-landing flight. An alpine flight in winter may land on snow, but it does not promise it.
Cloud, snowfall and wind cancel more winter flights, so build a spare day into your plans.
What information do you need when booking?
Expect to give some or all of the following:
- passenger names;
- passenger weights;
- children’s ages;
- contact details;
- travel date;
- preferred departure time;
- hotel details, if pickup is included.
For a private charter you may also discuss the itinerary, luggage, any special occasion, landing preferences and photography.
How early should you arrive?
Follow the operator’s instructions on your voucher, and do not turn up at the flight time itself. You need time for check-in, the weigh-in, the safety briefing and seat allocation. Most flights leave from operator bases at Frankton, beside Queenstown Airport, about ten minutes from the town centre, and some include hotel pickup while others use a courtesy coach from listed pickup points.
If you miss check-in, the operator may treat you as a no-show. Our flight-day guide walks through check-in and the briefing.
Can you choose your helicopter seat?
Usually not. The pilot or ground crew assign seats for weight and balance; the Heliworks listing says plainly that specific seats cannot be guaranteed. You can make a request, but safety comes first.
For photography, ask about the helicopter type, the windows and the seating layout. Do not pay extra on the assumption that you will get the front seat.
Should you book front-seat upgrades?
Some helicopter operators in other destinations sell paid front-seat upgrades, and policies vary. None of the Queenstown flights on this site lists one. If an operator offers one, decide whether the extra cost buys you enough for photography, an unblocked forward view or a special occasion, and remember that weight and balance can still decide where you sit.
What happens if your flight is cancelled?
If the operator cancels for weather, you are usually offered another departure, another flight or a refund or credit, depending on the booking conditions. On every flight on this site you can rebook or take a full refund. This is the reason to book early in your stay.
If you booked through a platform, the refund may go through that platform rather than the operator.
Should you buy travel insurance?
For an expensive helicopter itinerary, travel insurance can help with some trip cancellations, illness and travel disruption, depending on the policy. Insurance does not cover every cancellation, so read the wording. The operator’s weather policy is separate from your insurance.
Can you book a helicopter flight as a gift?
Yes. Some operators sell gift vouchers, gift cards or open-dated experiences, which work well for birthdays, anniversaries and weddings. Before buying one, check the expiry date, whether a later price rise means a top-up, any availability restrictions and whether it can be refunded.
Booking for a proposal
Don’t buy a standard ticket without telling the operator. Contact them, explain the plan, and ask what they can arrange: privacy, a private charter, time at the landing, photography and timing. The sunset flight is a common choice.
Weather can change the exact landing site, so plan the proposal around the flight, not one particular mountain.
Booking for a family
Check the child pricing, the infant rules, the number of seats, any combined weight limit and the length of the flight. On the Pilot’s Choice, children aged 4 to 14 and anyone over 15 kg need their own seat. A short Queenstown flight is easier for young children than a long Milford Sound day.
For families of four or more, compare the total for individual seats with a private-charter quote.
Booking for a group
Give the operator the exact number of passengers, each person’s weight and your luggage. If the group is too big for one helicopter, the operator may need two aircraft or two departures, which can change the price and the timing.
Booking for photography
Tell the operator if photography is the main purpose. Ask about the aircraft type, the window layout, whether doors-off flying is possible, whether they recommend a private charter and whether a route can be planned around your shots. Do not expect doors to be opened or removed on a standard sightseeing flight.
Questions to ask before paying

Frequently asked questions
How do I book a helicopter flight in Queenstown?
Choose the type of flight first (a short scenic flight, a landing, a glacier route or Milford Sound), then compare flight time, landing, transfers and price, and book online for one of your first full days in Queenstown. The $228 Pilot’s Choice, with a 25-minute flight, an alpine landing and hotel pickup, suits most first-time visitors.
How far in advance should I book a Queenstown helicopter flight?
As soon as you know your dates if the flight is a priority, and earlier still in summer, over Christmas and New Year, in ski season and for the once-a-day sunset flight. Every flight on this site cancels free up to 24 hours out, so booking early costs you nothing if your plans change.
Can I book a Queenstown helicopter flight on the same day?
Sometimes, for short scenic flights outside peak season. It is risky on a short stay, with a group or for Milford Sound, where seats and weather windows are tighter.
Do I need to give my weight when booking?
Usually, yes. Operators assign seats for weight and balance, and a large difference between the weight you give and your actual weight can force a change on the day.
What happens if my helicopter flight is cancelled for weather?
On every flight on this site, you can rebook or take a full refund. Booking early in your stay gives you spare days to rebook.
