Choose a short scenic flight if this is your first helicopter ride

You do not need to fly all the way to Milford Sound to see why Queenstown helicopter tours are popular. Even the shorter flights take you above Lake Wakatipu and into the alpine country around it within minutes, where roads and buildings disappear and Queenstown suddenly looks very small. Lake Wakatipu

Know before you book

An alpine landing is not a snow landing

The single most common mistake. “Alpine landing” means the aircraft puts down above the tree line; whether there is snow there depends on the month. Roughly June to October, usually yes. The advertised time includes the ground stop

A 25-minute flight is not 25 minutes of flying plus a landing: the landing is inside the number. This matters most at the short end, where the few minutes shut down on the ridge are a meaningful share of what you paid for. It is not a con, but it changes how you compare a 20-minute flight with a 50-minute one.

Flights get cancelled, so book early in your stay

Mountain flying needs suitable conditions, and routes, landing sites and sometimes whole flights change with the weather. Operators say flights depend on favourable conditions and that routes and landings vary at the pilot’s discretion; when they cancel for weather, you are offered another date or a refund. That happens more often than visitors expect, and far more often on the Fiordland routes than the Queenstown circuits. Even when Queenstown feels warm, the landing site can be much colder, and wind and altitude make it feel colder again. Bring a warm outer layer, long trousers if it is cool, sturdy closed shoes, sunglasses and sunscreen, and do not assume you will only be outside for a quick photo.

Weight limits, and why you cannot choose your seat

Operators ask for passenger weights at booking and may weigh you before departure, because the aircraft has limits on total passenger and baggage weight. It is about loading and balance, not judgement, so give accurate figures: a large discrepancy can force a change on the day. The same calculation sets the seating on a shared flight, so no operator can promise you the front seat; a private charter is the only way to control it. Children and accessibility

Many scenic flights accept children, though each operator sets its own rules, and a short local flight is a good first helicopter trip for a family.
